Batman. Catwoman. Hawkeye. Daredevil. Wonder Woman. The Hulk. Captain America. All these and more populate the universe of comic superheroes we have all come to know and love.
Why do we love them so much? While experts don't agree on the true root of the collective appeal of superheroes, they do admit that these mythic demigods and goddesses carry a lasting appeal that has little to do with their extraordinary abilities.
It is not supernatural power that makes them popular (or if it is, it is because those powers represent something). Superheroes are symbols for something deeper and it is this quality that allows them to remain popular and relevant no matter what time they are in (Relevant).
One draw is certainly the plainness -- the sheer ordinariness -- of their origin stories. Take Peter Parker, for example. Until he's bitten by a radioactive spider, he's quite ordinary. Smart, sure--but unassuming and shrimpy.
This, then, is one of the enduring (and endearing) elements of the superhero narrative arc: how something small and plain can serve, protect, and defend in extraordinary ways.
That's what we have in common with the Peter Parkers and Clark Kents of the world.
