It should surprise none of us to learn that trade shows have been around for as long as the mutual exchange of goods and services has existed. According to experts, archaeological evidence has linked trade shows to the ancient bazaars of the Middle East and the Medieval period of Europe.
Trade shows or trade fairs probably started with people simply displaying their wares in public places. They took time to talk one-on-one with potential buyers and explained why their offerings were better than others that were available.
This is the foundation of the trade show, and in many ways, this is still how things work.
In another sense, however, trade shows now offer so much more. The Northeast Buildings & Facilities Management Show which we plan to attend later in June is more than just an exhibition. It's accompanied by a conference.
By attending conference sessions, industry leaders will be informed on the latest developments in the areas of energy, sustainability, facility maintenance and management, lighting and electrical issues, as well as the ins and outs of building commissioning. Conferees will be challenged to measure their building's performance, inspect their disaster preparedness and recovery plans, and learn how to mitigate certain risks.
The conference sessions do not supersede the importance of the trade show, of course. The two merely complement one another.
